Power losses in low voltage systems have a greater impact on system efficiency than in high voltage systems. Based on this fact, in recent years it has been decided to increase the charging voltage of e.g. phones or tablets, i.e. low voltage systems from 5V to 9V, 12V and even 20V. Similar trends can be seen in high power systems (above 1kW).
High power systems, such as uninterruptible power supplies, photovoltaic inverters or constantly growing networks of charging stations for electric vehicles, are usually built on the basis of DC / DC converters. Until now, the supply voltage up to 400V has been used in such applications, but thanks to the modern WeEn solution in the form of Hyperfast 1200V diodes, the losses of the power can be significantly reduced and the system performance can be greatly increased.
The diodes described above require a wider drift region/depletion region to cope with such high reverse voltage. The consequence of widening the region is increased time it takes to extract the electrical charge when the diode turns off. In order to reduce the diode response time, the lifetime of charge carriers should be reduced, which in turn may cause a voltage drop and consequently a return to high losses in the system. WeEn is constantly working on improving the technology, which already allows the construction of highly efficient electrical devices.
